Cholesterol Lowering Foods - Help You Live Longer

Cholesterol lowering foods are around us most of the time, however, we often go for the foods that are convenient. Today's lifestyle is often busy and we typically reach for convenience rather than stopping, planning and thinking about what is good for us. Unfortunately, the convenient foods in shops may taste good or they may fill our hunger temporarily, however they often have poor nutrition. Poor health and high cholesterol then occurs as a result of poor food choices over the years.

Most people are familiar with the word or may have heard of the word cholesterol. Progressing on from there, you may then have heard of high cholesterol. Most people are aware that it may cause health problems down the track and having a high level is not good for your overall health.

However, the news isn’t all bad. Cholesterol is substance that occurs in every single cell of your body. It critical to the formation of your cells and therefore the function of your tissues. The danger for your health is having your cholesterol level too high as it could lead to a stroke - where the brain is starved of blood. This means that part of your brain dies. High cholesterol is also a major risk factor in the development of heart disease. However, the good news is that if you maintain a healthy diet eating cholesterol lowering foods and exercise on a regular basis you can lower your cholesterol level within a healthy range.

Cholesterol lowering foods is really a matter of back to basics. You should focus on having at least three to five servings of fruit or vegetables per day. Healthy eating should become part of your lifestyle.

Did you know that fruits and vegetables have no cholesterol? Keep in mind that you can eat fruits and vegetables as snacks, side dishes or even as a main dish. You may consider planning a vegetarian dish as a main course?

Starchy foods or carbohydrates such as bread, cereals, peas and pasta are low in fat. Try to eat five to ten servings of this food group daily. If your cholesterol level is low, you should try to keep your amount of carbohydrates to approximately 60% of your total calories. Eating whole grain breads rather than white bread is recommended because they have more fiber.

Another thing you can do to lower your cholesterol level is to buy dry cereals as they tend to be lower in fat. You should also try to limit the amount of sugar and baked goods you eat. This is especially so in processed foods such as the pies, pasties, fish and chips and commercial cakes. They have hidden fat in order for them to taster better. Even though they are tasty, they tend to have empty calories and with poor nutrition for your body.

When you are dining out at a restaurant, a good tip is to remember to choose meals that low-fat and therefore low cholesterol. Check with the waiter or waitress and find out how the foods are prepared or cooked. Avoid food that is fried, breaded, covered with cheese. Instead you should focus on foods that are steamed, broiled, poached or grilled.

If you have failed to plan and have to eat on the run, we recommend you go to the salad section of the "fast food" shop. It is essential that you avoid burgers that are layered with cheese, mayonnaise and bacon. If you are having meats, choose options such as broiled chicken and meats that have minaiml or no have visible fat.

For breakfast, individuals should focus on foods such as fruits or high fiber cereals. As you probably know, foods such as bacon, sausages and eggs have a high amount of cholesterol. It is best to avoid them or only have them as a treat on special occasions. Choose cholesterol lowering foods such as fruits is one of your best breakfast options

Cholesterol lowering foods are nothing special - they involve foods that we were often told to eat when we were young such as fruit and vegetables. As people grew up and become adults, they often forget or put other priorities in front of their health. Often, it takes just a few small changes to improve eating habits. As with any eating plan, choosing cholesterol lowering foods should be considered a priority. It is essential for the individual to focus on the benefits of eating cholesterol lowering foods. Don’t focus on what you can’t eat. Over a short period of time and your commitment, you will get to love and choose cholesterol lowering foods in order to regain your health and wellbeing.
